Announcing the FE Strategic Leadership Programme

The new Further Education Strategic leadership programme is commissioned by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) and will be delivered by Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, one of the world’s leading business schools, renowned for delivering cutting-edge education and groundbreaking research.

The programme, which is designed to raise leadership capability and capacity, is open to Principals and CEOs across further education and training. An initial 100 places will be filled in three cohorts, the first beginning in June 2017.

The ETF’s long-term ambition is to create an inclusive programme for the entire sector leadership.

Further education and training as a whole face some of the biggest challenges since college incorporation in 1992. These include but are not limited to:

  • The scale of the skills challenge facing the nation after Brexit;
  • Policy changes with their opportunities and risks, such as the Sainsbury Review; proposed T-levels and new technical routes; the new apprenticeships system; and area reviews leading to more college mergers; continuing social, economic and technical change.
  • Financial stringency.

The programme has been developed in close consultation with sector leaders. ETF engaged widely within the sector, and the programme was formally scoped for ETF by the Association of Colleges and Roffey Park leadership institute. Building on this work Saïd Business School will design and deliver the programme using their expertise in partnering with institutions at critical points in their change journey and enabling them to develop the capabilities needed for long-term success.

Sir Frank McLoughlin, ETF Director of Leadership, said:

‘Leadership is the key to the success of any organisation. The leadership challenges in the public education system continue to grow in size and complexity.’
‘I know principals and CEOs will relish the opportunity to work with Saïd Business School, to raise their own leadership capacity, and the capability of the whole further education sector. Our long-term ambition is an inclusive programme that reaches every CEO in the sector.’
