A new interactive ‘what works’ resource for those working with pupils and students with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) has been published today.
The resource – ‘SEN support: research evidence on effective approaches and examples of current practice in good and outstanding schools and colleges’ – provides leaders, teachers and practitioners with access to information and evidence-based practice that can be effective for SEN support all in one place and is drawn from academic research papers, a survey of schools and post-16 institutions and a set of commissioned case studies.
The new tool will be useful for leaders, teachers, SENCOs and support staff and is published as the Dame Christine Lenehan’s review into residential special schools and colleges calls for greater support for children and young people with SEND in mainstream provision.
School and colleges leadership teams, SENCOs and classroom teachers are encouraged to review their provision against the seven key features of effective support.
Practitioners can look at the detail of interventions and approaches and consider what would be most beneficial in their setting for meeting the needs of children and young people with special educational needs in their settings.
The resource was developed by ASK Research and Coventry University and funded by the Department for Education: it is hosted on the Education and Training Foundation’s Excellence Gateway and the Nasen SEND Gateway.
Examples of effective practice include:
