Event Focus: Ann Gravells’ Improving professionalism to achieve outstanding teaching, learning and assessment

In our second Event Focus blog, Ann Gravells, author and training consultant, writes about her CPD event – ‘Improving professionalism to achieve outstanding teaching, learning and assessment’. The event is taking place in Leeds on Friday 14 June. It is aimed at anyone who works in the further education and training sector, no matter what their experience.

I have been delivering CPD events for many years now, in-house, independently or with other authors. I am often getting asked about what’s happening in the sector, therefore organising an annual CPD event gives practitioners the opportunity to find things out, as well as to have a fun, interesting and informative day. The day will have an informal atmosphere, with lots of time for questions and networking.

I have a lot of regulars, participants who come to most of my events. I’m often told they enjoy the day because myself and the speakers are so approachable. They also say they go away with lots of information and they like the fact that the topics are all explained in plain English; with plenty of opportunities for questions and sharing good practice with others. If feel that’s what makes my events a bit different.

This year I’m facilitating the event with Sharron Mansell, author of the book Achieving QTLS Status, which I recently edited. Sharron is the Assistant Principal for Quality at the White Rose Beauty Colleges, which received an Outstanding judgment from Ofsted for its first inspection. She will be sharing ideas during the day regarding innovative teaching, learning and assessment approaches.

We have chosen the theme of Improving professionalism to achieve outstanding teaching, learning and assessment, as we feel it’s important for anyone working in the sector to demonstrate their professionalism whilst being outstanding in their role. The speakers and activities taking place should help practitioners to achieve this.

The day will start with pastries and refreshments on arrival. There will be some fantastic exhibitors (see logos) including SAGE Publishing who will be selling discounted educational books. You will have the opportunity to talk to all the exhibitors, including ETF/SET, if perhaps you have any questions about QTLS/ATS, or being a member of the professional association.

It can be hard to keep up-to-date with what’s happening in the sector when you are busy getting on with your job. However, this is a very important aspect of your role. I will be hosting a session about what’s new and what’s changing, as well as a session regarding quality and compliance.

Other key speakers will explain topics which are very relevant at this time, such as end-point assessment, what an awarding organisation expects from their centres, the revised Ofsted Education Inspection Framework, and what outstanding looks like. Knowledge of these topics and more will all help contribute to being professional and outstanding in your role.

There will be the opportunity for discussions, to share good practice and to network with like-minded people.

There will also be an ongoing quiz with prizes at the end. A buffet lunch and all refreshments are included, as is Wi-Fi and a goody bag with some pleasant surprises. All participants will receive an electronic record of attendance.

The price is £180 to include pastries on arrival, lunch, refreshments, Wi-Fi and a goody bag. If you have attended a CPD event with me in the past, please contact me directly for a discount code to pay £150. ann@anngravells.com
