New to ESOL – ESOL and numeracy (Audio)

ESOL and numeracy aims to develop the numeracy skills of beginner ESOL learners and to build their confidence in recognising and using numbers in their everyday lives.  It is anticipated that within a beginner ESOL class, learners might have very different levels of numeracy.  This is accommodated through differentiated activities and tasks which practise the language of numeracy in addition to specific numeracy skills.

This teacher’s pack consists of teacher’s notes and classroom resources. Links are provided to online self-access numeracy activities, which learners can be signposted to for homework and to consolidate their learning.

The pack provides a minimum of 9 hours of learning through a series of three linked units.  Each unit has two 90 minute lessons which can each be used as a standalone.  Extension activities are suggested giving learners further practice and for use in follow-up sessions.

The resource is suitable for community ESOL and ESOL delivered in adult learning or FE.  Internet access and projection equipment is not needed, although a data projector would be an advantage.

Level: Entry 1 / National 2 in Scotland / CEFR A1

The materials have been differentiated so that they are accessible to pre-Entry 1 learners through to emerging E2 learners.

Overview

The three units in ESOL and numeracy are:

Unit 1: Introduction to number

• Lesson 1: Numbers in our everyday lives develops learners’ confidence in recognising, saying and writing numbers.
• Lesson 2: Understanding numbers on a bank statement introduces learners to addition and subtraction in the context of a bank statement.

Unit 2: Fractions, decimals, percentages and rounding

• Lesson 1: Money and reading prices introduces decimals in the context of shopping.  Learners learn the names of coins and notes and practise saying, understanding, adding and subtracting prices.
• Lesson 2: Shopping for bargains introduces fractions and percentages and gives learners the opportunity to use them to calculate supermarket offers.

Unit 3: Metric and imperial systems of measurement

• Lesson 1: Measuring introduces the language for weights and measures, including vocabulary for measuring equipment and metric and imperial units. 
• Lesson 2: Following a recipe gives learners further practice of weights and measures in the context of reading a recipe.
