The Centres for Excellence in Maths (CfEM) programme is launching a new webinar series titled, ‘The Inside Scoop: Evidence informed practice from maths teachers who have tried it’.
The 45-minute-long webinars will showcase ideas and approaches from the CfEM programme, drawing on current evidence-based research carried out by teachers in Further Education (FE) to help students to improve maths attainment.
The series of free webinars are aimed at FE maths teachers and managers and will run from 21-31 March.
Topic | Date and Time | Aims |
---|---|---|
Double Number Lines & Ratio Tables | 21 March 2022, 4:15 – 5pm | The session aims to encourage the creation of “pictures” that reflect proportional relationships and encourages teachers to question students about the methods they are trying and probe their thinking. |
Algebra Tiles | 22 March 2022 4:15 – 5pm | The session aims to foster ways to develop algebraic thinking and celebrate visual justifications using algebra tiles. Research shows that students benefit from the opportunity to bring creativity to the problem solving and learning space. |
Dyscalculia | 23 March 2022 4:15 – 5pm | The session aims to give you a better understanding of dyscalculia and how to work flexibly to support students with poor number sense who tend to focus on procedures and rely on methods that they feel secure with. |
Using maths-art images to make sense of factors multiples and primes | 24 March 2022 4:15 – 5pm | Many maths re-sitters have a negative perception of themselves as maths learners, which can be compounded by maths anxiety. Using images can help students to build a connected understanding of factors, multiples and primes. |
Visualisation & Variation | 28 March 2022 4:15 – 5pm | This session will explore visualisation and variation strategies that have been effective in developing resitters understanding of maths concepts. |
Managing Maths - What Works? | 29 March 2022 4:15 – 5pm | A question panel of three Centres for Excellence in Maths who will be asked to share their thoughts about their successes and approach to running FE GCSE maths and functional skills departments in the current educational climate. |
Breaking the barrier of mathematical language from Functional Skills through to GCSE | 30 March 2022 4:15 – 5pm | The session aims to provide attendees with strategies to support learners with their comprehension and use of examination based and mathematical language within FS and GCSE maths classes. |
SEND Maths | 31 March 2022 4:15 – 5pm | Details to be confirmed. |
