Supporting teaching and learner outcomes with Can-Do Maths

The recruitment period for the Can-Do Maths research project has opened. Funded by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and designed and delivered by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF), Can-Do Maths is a professional development programme for further education teachers to learn and implement whole-class techniques to develop the resilience and engagement of GCSE maths re-sit learners.

Teachers taking part will learn strategies aimed at enabling them to effectively motivate and engage learners with a wide-ranging package of support including:

  • Specialised training and support: comprehensive CPD and one-on-one guidance from experienced maths practitioners, designed to transform the way teachers approach GCSE maths re-sits.
  • Valuable resources and activities: access to structured lesson resources and support materials, ready to use in classrooms to boost students’ engagement and resilience.
  • Collaboration with peers: opportunities to participate in online planning and reflection sessions with fellow educators, sharing insights and strategies to maximise the impact on learners.

Participating colleges will receive a remission payment of £2,057 per participating teacher to cover their time in delivering this intervention, equivalent to one hour per week for 36 weeks.

This programme is open to teachers and colleges in England who:

  • teach GCSE maths re-sit classes to learners aged 16-19
  • did not participate in the Motivation and Engagement large scale action research (CfEM)
  • are not participating in any other maths evaluation or trial.
