The Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Finance Director / Chief Finance Officer (CFO) Mentor Programme enters its second year.
Limited places are now available for 2021/2022 academic year.
This DfE subsidised programme is a confidential mentor service free to participants, delivered with FE practitioners with substantial Finance Director and Principal experience in high performing colleges.
Development is based on regular monthly meetings, with support available in between meetings if required. Candidates are carefully matched to a mentor/coach most closely aligned to their own, and their college’s requirements.
Some of the key areas that the mentor sessions aim to support Finance Directors / CFOs in are:
- leading change
- building external relationships and developing influencing skills
- presenting to your Board of Governors
- Principal / Chair / Clerk and Finance Directors working together
- confidentiality on any issue which is challenging individual performance
- improving the overall performance of your College.

Testimonials from previous participants
“My experience of the ETF mentor programme has been overwhelmingly positive, I would highly recommend it. The sessions with my mentor are tailored to my needs, covering short and longer term goals or problem solving as it arises. I have already benefitted from the links and FE industry experience on offer through this programme, which is a key difference compared to other mentoring I have experienced – in this scheme you have the benefit of working with a very experienced FE professional who can recommend connections & sources of information that are bang on and cut through to the heart of the issue you are dealing with.”
“Having the mentor support has been excellent for me over the past year. With a number of issues to deal with, to have someone to talk things through with who has an understanding of the role and responsibilities that come with the job of being an FD has proved to be invaluable in helping me to be able to lift my head and grab some thinking space.”
“These sessions are providing real-life examples and tools to support organisational change and wider ownership of financial sustainability. Changes won’t be instant but I have increased confidence that I and the college can improve financial performance.”
