Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND)

In 2021-22, we are delighted that our flagship Centres for Excellence in SEND will continue to support leaders, managers and practitioners to create inclusive organisations enabling all learners to achieve their aspirations. Since their launch in 2019, over 3,000 of you have engaged with the Centres to work together to create the world we want to see.


Centres for Excellence in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Our three national Centres for Excellence in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) offer expert support for leaders, managers and practitioners who wish to put learners with SEND at the centre of their organisation.

Corrienne Peasgood, City College Norwich, Mandie Stravino, Derby College and Dr Paul Phillips, Weston College offer free confidential, one-to-one support to leaders who are striving to make their own organisations more inclusive and successful. Managers and practitioners should tap into the support offered by each Centre’s communities of practice.


Employers’ voice

We are delighted to announce eight new FE providers who will complement the excellent work of the Centres for Excellence in SEND. The new FE providers will act as ‘employer spokes’ to the Centres’ hubs – to bring the employer voice right to the fore. The eight new providers have excellent relationships with employers and will jointly deliver with them to showcase the benefits of employing learners with SEND and having a diverse workforce.

Bringing the mainstream and specialist sectors together

We have commissioned AoC and Natspec to identify outstanding practice in the mainstream and specialist parts of the FE system and to explore how to maximise knowledge, skills and resources through partnership work and two-way learning. The work commenced in October 2021 and will conclude in March 2022 with a report outlining the various approaches. As we uncover interesting and effective practice, we will highlight these examples on our SEND site so do watch this space.
