As the Further Education and Training sector is not regulated you are not required to hold any particular qualification to teach. However, you may find that employers expect them and we advise that it is best practice to hold the full qualifications for the job, in this case the Diploma in Education & Training (DET) – for full details of the suite of qualifications and equivalences. There are specialist qualifications in literacy, numeracy, SEN and ESOL – subject specialist diplomas which are the hallmarks of fully qualified staff.
The professional body which promotes the values and standards of teaching in the sector is the Society for Education and Training (SET). Joining is not obligatory but is encouraged. Additionally membership allows you to apply for QTLS which is the professional status for the sector. For more information see SET.
Additionally, the Foundation provides a range of support for teachers of maths & English GCSE. See English and maths.
