Forums will bring people together to:

The Education and Training Foundation is developing a new training course for all those in the sector that lead their organisations. We want to hear about your experiences; what you think are ‘essential‘ outcomes to be achieved and any common challenges you have in working with Governors. Your views will help shape the scope of the content and ideas.

The session will explore what is a “safe space”; how does this change from person to person and in terms of external environment and how we create a “safe space”?

A short overview of some of recent updates across the broader world of safeguarding. The briefing will cover essential changes in law, policy and new or emerging research and tools.

Setting the scene for the day, the session will highlight some of the key considerations relating to digital safeguarding highlighting some of the current online risks and harms and presenting a model for supporting organisations to mitigate risks to learners.

We will consider online harms such as nude image sharing and online blackmail and the role of NCA-CEOP. The session will include:

We will hear about a real life journey of an organisation that has migrated to digital delivery. What were the risks and considerations? What were the challenges and opportunities? The presentation will give opportunity to think about key learning and application in your own setting.

1.30pm – Beyond Content: understanding competencies with Project EVOLVE and 360 Degree Safe
An overview and introduction to Project EVOLVE and 360 Degree Safe.
Project EVOLVE resources each of the 330 statements from UK Council for Internet Safety’s (UKCIS) framework “Education for a Connected World” with research, resources, activities and outcomes to guide educators.
360 degree safe is a self-review tool to support online safety policy and practice. The review takes you through each aspect of online safety, helping you to collaborate, report, and progress.
The session will introduce how these tools can support practitioners.

2.40pm – Radicalisation: Safeguarding, Signs, and the Online World
Please be advised this presentation may contain some imagery and audio that could be distressing for some.
With the online world moving so quickly it can be difficult to keep knowledge up to date. This session aims to recap on the signs of radicalisation and then do a deep dive into a selection of online platforms to look at how they function and where any concerns may lie.

Throughout the day there will be time for questions and pause for reflection about learning and application in your context. Parts of the day may be recorded.
Power point slides will be available for some sessions and only for those delegates who attended the day.
Q: Can anyone in the FE sector attend?
A: The Forums are specifically for anyone in the FE and training sector who has a safeguarding role or function as part of a wider role. You may be a designated safeguarding lead, safeguarding officer or other title. What is important is that you have responsibilities for Safeguarding and Prevent.
Q: I’d like to attend but do not work for a Further Education FE provider. Can I still attend?
A: You must be working for an organisation within the FE and training sector. This includes colleges, specialist colleges, independent training providers, adult community learning and offender learning providers, sixth form colleges, workbased learning.
Q: What time should I join the Forum?
A: In order for delegates to get the best experience we want to make sure the session starts on time. Please join 15 minutes before advertised start. So for example if the Webinar is scheduled to start at 10am, please make sure you join by 9.45am.
Q: How do I join the Forum?
A: Once you have booked your place, you will be sent an email to confirm your place. The email will give you the link that you must use to join. The email will also confirm the time of registration.
When joining the event from your device, please make sure your display name will match the name on your booking form. This will help us with the registration process. We will do our best to identify you and assist you. If you name appears differently on your Zoom display to your booking form, this may delay your entry into the event. Find instructions on how to join Zoom using the correct name.
Q: Do I have to attend the whole day?
A: We know people are extremely busy and so we have designed the day to provide flexibility for you to come and go. We ask that you attend the plenary sessions, if possible and at least one of the Core Sessions in order to get the most out of the day. There are lots of sessions to choose from and you can opt in or out through the booking system. We do ask as a matter of courtesy to our speakers and other participants, that you let us know as soon as possible if you are no longer able to attend.
Q: What if I book and then cannot attend?
A: There are limited places available and booking is a first come first served basis. We understand that emergencies and unforeseen circumstances can arise. We do ask as a matter of courtesy to our speakers and other participants, that you let us know as soon as possible if you are no longer able to attend.
Q: What happens when all the places are gone?
A: We have a limited number of places. If you are unable to book because all places are gone, you can register your interest via the booking page. We will keep bookings under review and let you know if a place becomes available.
Q: Will there be other opportunities?
A: ETF are working with partners to produce a range of opportunities for those with Safeguarding and Prevent responsibilities to further their knowledge, network, discuss and reflect. This includes a planned second Forum on 23 March 2021 and webinars. Dates and details of webinars will follow but please keep checking here as we will be updating with further information.

Sam will explore what we actually mean by grooming and radicalisation. Are they the same thing and should our responses be the same? What is the relationship between grooming and extremism in modern society? By tackling one does this impact on the other?
During the session, we will consider the impact of extremism and radicalisation on further education and what we should be doing to keep learners safe and our reputations intact.
