Mentoring: Framework and Guides

As part of our support for the professional development for mentors and coaches of practitioners in Further Education and Training, ETF commissioned the development of a national mentoring framework and three accompanying guides for mentors, mentees and leaders.

The aim of the framework and guides is to:

  • establish a shared understanding of effective mentoring practice
  • enhance the quality of mentoring for practitioners
  • ensure that mentoring is supportive and nurturing
  • help mentees and mentors to develop teaching, learning and assessment strategies which meet learners’ needs.

The ETF’s mentoring framework has been developed with practitioners and leaders from the FE sector.

Mentoring and coaching have the potential to be one of the most effective forms of professional development for teachers and trainers, including early career practitioners. However, in order to be effective, there are a series of practices which need to be enacted – these are outlined in the following framework and accompanying guides. We hope you find them helpful.

If you would like to take part in our free CPD on mentoring for leaders/managers, mentors, mentees and mentoring coordinators, please take a look at our professional development programmes.
