Practitioner-led development and research

In this section

The ETF offers a range of CPD programmes that promote the use of practitioner-led development and/or practitioner research. We believe that enabling FE practitioners to take charge of their own professional development can lead to increased levels of empowerment, motivation and most importantly improvement for learners. Each of the programmes listed here offer practitioners the chance to support their own and others’ growth in teaching, learning and assessment.

Practice development groups involve groups of teachers and trainers meeting in action learning sets to develop an area of teaching, learning and assessment with a particular focus on embedding maths and English or the teaching of English.

OTLA collaborative projects consist of small groups of FE practitioners undertaking an action research project with the support of a research mentor. In the years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 the OTLA collaborative project focused on English teaching.

The ETF’s practitioner research programme, run in partnership with the University of Sunderland, enables FE practitioners to develop their research skills at postgraduate level.

Finally, our range of CPD activities for advanced practitioners enables teachers and trainers to develop their knowledge, behaviour and skills to provide effective peer-to-peer support for colleagues.
