Guidance for applications

The information provided below is for Round 2.

The Department for Education (DfE) has asked the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) to manage Taking Teaching Further on its behalf.

This applications guidance is a call for applications for:

The document sets out:

  • the context and ambitions of the fund
  • the process for making and assessing applications
  • the criteria against which applications will be assessed

Successful applicants must be ready to progress with their planned programme of activities in May 2019.

This application guidance relates to Round 2, which is for activity that starts in the 2019-20 financial year.

The application process:

Applications for Round 2 close at 12 noon on 15 February 2019.

How to apply – submitting your application

Applications must be submitted to and must be received by 12 noon on 15 February 2019.

Any applications received after this time or date will not be assessed.

Please note there are important changes to the selection process for Strand 1, Round 2.

To help us develop more robust evidence, the selection of ITE places in Round 2 will be allocated differently to that of the previous round.

We are going to undertake a Randomised Control Trial which is widely recognised as one of the most rigorous methods for evaluation. Evaluating the effectiveness of the programme in a robust way will help the DfE to make the case for future investment.

Providers will still need to demonstrate quality through the application process however, rather than us selecting on a purely competitive basis, all providers above the quality threshold will then be randomly selected.

Please note, some of those providers who meet the threshold criteria but are not selected for ITE places will still be invited to take part in the programme evaluation. Whilst participation isn’t mandatory for these providers, we would encourage as many as possible to take part as this will help strengthen the evaluation process and add legitimacy to the evaluation outcomes.

Please see the application guidance for more information on the threshold criteria.
