As the national workforce development body for the Further Education and Training Sector, we are developing a suite of high-quality professional development offers to support the teachers, trainers and leaders who will be delivering T Levels in 2020 and beyond.
We bring to this role our experience, our expertise and our commitment to working in partnership with the sector. There are many examples of providers who deliver outstanding technical education and we are using their expertise and that of employers, professional bodies, T Level panels and others in the design of the T Level Professional Development offer.
The aim of the offer is to ensure that further education and post-16 providers in the first two tranches are T Level-ready, as well as supporting those wanting to deliver them later. This means ensuring that teachers and trainers have the teaching skills, subject knowledge and confidence needed to deliver a high-quality T Level programme from the outset.
The flexible offer will be shaped around the needs of providers and their workforce alongside relevant regional, employer and curriculum needs. This will be part of an ongoing needs analysis with initial providers.
While the full content of the offer is still being developed, its five key strands are:
Ongoing professional development needs analysis: Building a clear understanding of professional development needs. This will be an ongoing process that will inform the development of the offer and learn from the excellent practice that already exists.
Understanding T Levels: Ensuring that all staff understand T Levels and what the new qualifications mean for their roles.
Teacher development programme: Focusing on pedagogy (core teaching skills and methods); subject knowledge and subject-specific teaching; professional practice (industrial and employability understanding for teachers); and developing teachers’ capacity to embed English, maths and digital skills in technical teaching environments.
Regional Knowledge Hubs and Industry Insights: Embedding learning from the Understanding T Levels, Teacher development and Organisational readiness strands of the professional development support offer through regional development networks and route-specific workshops, with input from industry and professional bodies. This strand’s activity will include opportunities for collaborative working between providers, employers and stakeholders to address challenges and find local solutions. Industry Insight activity will include work and industry placements for teachers and employer facilitated practice and development workshops, to enable a clear line of sight to work and genuine two-way street.
Organisational readiness: Focusing on professional development around leading and managing educational change, targeted at middle managers, with a particular focus on teaching leadership and curriculum planning/timetabling.
